As Geoff noted, this travel thing is hard work, and we got a bit soft being transported around in our friends' cars. On our own again yesterday, we walked at length, resulting in some new blisters for me (I acquire them easily so no sympathy is needed). So today we took full advantage of the public transit system, which includes the ferries. We were quite pleased I have figured out the most economical option (OPAL card), and gave our feet a rest while gaining access to some of the outlying areas of the city. To some extent riding the ferries here reminded me of riding the canal buses in Venice; the ease of getting around the city using water routes as transport.
Our first foray was to Paramatta, a three hour return trip through the harbour and up the river; a picturesque and peaceful beginning to the day.
We decided not to explore Paramatta itself, as the ride up the river was really all we wanted. On the way back I got engaged in a fascinating discussion with a woman who was born in Dresden three weeks before it was fire bombed during late WWII. Her story was fascinating, making the return trip seem very short.
From there it was over to Manly beach, a "must see" for any visitor to Sydney as evidenced by the high volume of passengers on the Manly ferries. While the beach was nice, neither of us was awestruck. While the weather report had predicted temperatures up to 30, it actually was quite a cool day, so no swim for me.
