Before Annemarie and Kathy left me in our small apartment to write, they told me to have fun. This is the view from where I sit to write. You tell me how this couldn't be fun!
I live for moments like this. Soft Greek music filtering up through the plant covered roof top above the restaurant just across the Old Quarter back street from where we are staying. The old Ventian city walls just visible. Soft warm air with a gentle breeze. I live for moments like this.
Much has happened since I last wrote a couple of days ago. Yesterday departed Agia on the ferry,
and we travelled along the south coast to Loutro. Across deep blue and turquoise waters of the Libyan Sea.
Past high cliffs.
Stunningly high with walking trails along the cliffs to allow one to walk between the villages. The lower level tract in the following photo is the route and it climbs and descends along the coast .
Not surprisingly we have purchased an excellent German guide detailing all the walking routes on Crete. It seems that a return trip to Crete with proper walking gear has already found our imaginations and begun to germinate. To walk fishing village to fishing village along the south coast in early or late season holds great appeal.
Perhaps sometime in the next few years. If you don't dream, it doesn't happen.
There were 'younger' gorge cuts along the way allowing the movement of snow melt from the high mountains behind.
Yup. They have lots of winter snows up high, over 1,700 metres. Stephan told me that last winter was very cold for these parts and this year is expected to be the same. He spends 7 months each year in Agia working everyday in his hotel, mini-mart and taverna operations. At the end of October he moves back to Chania for the 5 winter months. Then returns the next spring to do it all over again.
Our last evening in Agia Roumeli we had a few clouds blow in and the resulting early light was quite unusual. It took me out of my taverna chair, away from my raki and beer...it was that interesting.
And down to the waters edge under the influence!
But I managed not to fall in:)
While still in Agia we had an enjoyable morning encounter with the sheep herder, or is that shepherd? We discussed the correct term without resolution.
He cut olive tree branches and used them as their intial feed before releasinging the goats onto the mountains above for the day.
It became a hilarious free for all!
And did I tell you about the sweetest grapes I've ever enjoyed? It's harvest time and I purchased this huge bag of grapes for next to nothing. So good!
When we arrived at Loutro,
We found our way out of the village and onto the 1:30 bus, destination Chania. The climb out of the village was quite precipitous! High through the mountains and down to the north coast again and Chania.

After enjoying a caraf of wine with this view we returned to watch the sunset from our roof.
An excellent dinner at the restaurant across from our place which features live music every night...until 2:30 am! Both nice places, but maybe shouldn't be across the street from each other:) Last night as returning guests we were provided with two complimentary desserts and two bottles of raki! Very nice, and perhaps at that moment it was good that the two places were situated so close together.
This morning a walk around old town harbour and along the wall.
Tomorrow an early flight to Athens. We've spent the afternoon cleaning clothes and repacking our gear to make sure we can get back onto the airplane.
